About Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation surgery, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure designed to enhance the size and shape of a person’s breasts. Breast implants, typically consisting of a laminated silicone shell filled with cohesive silicone gel, are surgically placed in the chest area to achieve the desired breast volume and contour.

Patients may opt for breast augmentation for various reasons, including a desire to restore breast volume lost due to pregnancy or weight loss, improve breast symmetry, or enhance their overall body proportions.

The procedure begins with a thorough consultation between the patient and Dr Prochazka, during which careful examination and measurements are made, and implant type, size, and placement are discussed, with a focus on achieving the patient’s desired result. The patient’s motivations for the procedure are explored in detail, in order to ensure that an appropriate decision has been made. Dr Prochazka will also outline the possible complications of the surgery. This “informed consent” process is essential for a good outcome.

A second consultation will generally also be required – this may be conducted remotely. However, at least one face-to-face consultation is mandatory in order that accurate measurements can be recorded, which are critical in order to optimise implant selection.

Surgery is always performed under general anaesthesia in a licensed hospital. During the surgery, incisions are carefully made, usually in or near the folds at the breast bases, to minimize visible scarring. The doctor then places the implants in a surgically created pocket (usually beneath the chest muscle). Incisions are then closed with “buried” (i.e. internal dissolving) sutures.

Recovery time varies, but patients typically experience some discomfort, swelling, and bruising in the days following the surgery. Dr Prochazka recommends the wearing of a post-operative surgical bra for at least four months post surgery, in order to support the augmented breasts and ensure comfort. Regular follow-ups and proper post-operative care contribute to achieving the best and safest results.

While breast augmentation can provide a boost in self-esteem and body confidence, it’s essential for individuals considering this procedure to have realistic expectations and to choose an appropriately qualified doctor with expertise in breast enhancement surgeries. Dr Prochazka has been performing breast augmentation surgery since 2005 and has successfully treated over a thousand patients.
